FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Definitions

LCBA = Leduc & County Basketball Association, a Leduc & area community based volunteer organization for both basketball training and competitive gameplay.
EYBA  = Edmonton Youth Basketball Association,  a Edmonton & area community based volunteer organization for competitive youth basketball gameplay.   The LCBA is a member of the EYBA league.
ABA = Alberta Basketball Association, the governing body organization for the sport of basketball in Alberta. The EYBA is a member of the ABA. 
XXU = Under XX=Player Age, youth divisions are based on age.

WHAT DOES THE EYBA DO?

The EYBA provides:

• Gyms for league games, schedules, and referee coordination and scheduling. 
• Maintains a league website for information as well as game schedules and results.
• Provide a disciplinary component to the leagues to enforce fair play and compliance.
• They work with Alberta Basketball (ABA) on training, Provincials, referees and player development issues.

WHEN DOES THE SEASON BEGIN?

Player registrations opens at the beginning of July, the exact date posted on our LCBA website and Facebook group before the end of June.

For under 9 year old teams (7U/9U), the Fall-Winter season starts in September till March:

• Weekly practices/sessions only.
• No league games.
• End of season Jamboree style tournament.

For 9 to 14 year old teams (11U/13U/15U), the Fall-Winter season starts in September till March, with player evaluations near the end of August:

• The player evaluation dates and times per division to be posted along with the registration notice in July.
• For high competitive teams (Tier I or Tier II), there is also a EYBA seeding tournament in mid-September to determine eligibility by the EYBA.
• Typically three rounds of EYBA league games:
  • First round EYBA regular season games will begin September / early October going through to Christmas break.
  • Second round EYBA regular season games continue after the Christmas break in January and February.
  • Playoffs are held at the start of March
  • Top tier teams are also eligible to play in Alberta Provincial championships in early March.

For 15 to 17 year old (18U) teams, the Fall ONLY season starts in September till November, with player evaluations near the end of August:

• The player evaluation dates and times per division to be posted along with the registration notice in July
• For high competitive teams (Tier I or Tier II), there is also a EYBA seeding tournament in mid-September to determine eligibility by the EYBA.
• Fall Season for this age division is a single round of EYBA league season games.
• LCBA may or may not offer a Winter season for teams, depending on availability of players and league teams:
  • Players that are on high-school (both junior or varsity) teams are prohibited by the Alberta Schools Athletic Association (ASAA) from playing non-ASAA (ie: Community) basketball teams during the same season.
  • Typically there may not not enough community only (non high-school) players to form a winter 18U teams with the EYBA.
  • LCBA may post any alternative (ie: 3x3 format) fall basketball programs available for community players.

WHEN/WHERE ARE TEAM PRACTICES?

Practices occur once a week in the evenings at school gyms within Leduc or at the Leduc Recreational Center.

• Practice nights are not determined till the teams are finalized, which happens early September once the LCBA has final count of registered players and has assigned them to teams to based on available head coaches and gym slots.
• Should your regular practice time change due to a school closure, your respective coach will inform you directly.
• Please note that if it is a school PD Day, there will be no practice at the school as schools are closed to public groups on those days.
• Alternate practice arrangements may be made at the head coaches request to the Gym Coordinator, and your head coach will communicate this directly to player parents as well as updated on the team website.
  
  

WHEN/WHERE ARE TEAM GAMES?

League Games are played any where in the Greater Metro Edmonton area, ie; St Albert, Sherwood Park, Beaumont, Leduc and Edmonton.

Regular Game days are scheduled based on a team's Tier placement (click here for more info) 

• Tier 1 / Tier 2 ranks are for higher competition teams and games are played during the weeknight evenings:
  • Boys play on Tuesday evenings
  • Girls play on Wednesday evenings
• Tier 3 + ranks are for higher development/community and games are played mostly on Saturday with the occasional Friday evening.
  
  

WHO ARE THE COACHES?

All LCBA coaches are volunteers; and most often, parents of players.

• Teams greatly benefit when there is a Coach & Assistant Coach to assist with coaching and teaching the sport of basketball to the youth.
• All coaches are offered full reimbursement for coaching courses in line with ABA nd the NCCP coaching pathway. 
• All coaches must clear a criminal record check.

HOW ARE TEAMS CREATED?

All player registrations are a determined on first-paid/registered, first-serve basis for available LCBA Community teams*.

*The number of LCBA Community teams available is determined by:

• the number of registered players, typically 8 to 12 per competitive team
• the number of available head coaches
• the number of available gym spaces for practices

WHAT HAPPENS IF THERE IS NO VOLUNTEER COACH?

LCBA will make every effort to find coaches for all teams. However, if no parent volunteers and an alternate coach cannot be found, the team will be disbanded.

• If a player cannot be transferred to another team, their registration fees will be refunded.

HOW ARE PLAYERS ASSIGNED TO TEAMS?

Under 9 year old team (9U) teams are assigned randomly based on number of registered players. 

• Parents wishing to have players/friends on the same (non-competitive) team can make a request with the LCBA Registrar, however the registrar is not obligated to accommodate requests.

Players 9 to 14 years old (11U, 13U & 15U) play in EYBA community leagues that are grouped into multiple Tiers of different skill levels. Registered players in these age groups are evaluated at the start of the year and then placed into teams afterwards based on both their individual skill level and team dynamics.

• Player evaluations are performed by a mixture of coaches & other knowledgeable individuals who are impartial to team selections.
• Players/parents should have no preconceptions of which competitive team level they will be placed on.
• Players are assigned to their respective teams after player evaluations are completed.

For 15 year old to 17 year old (18U) teams:

• If there are enough player to form more than one team, player team assignments are made via a Coaches Player Draft.

Team placement decisions are final.

• The LCBA Executive Committee will only intervene in team placements under the rare instances there is sufficient evidence of procedural misconduct or a flagrant disregard for fairness.

Team rosters will be displayed on the website and the respective head coach will contact each player on his/her roster to introduce themselves and further communicate details of the team.

WHAT DO MY FEES PAY FOR?

Fees you pay cover the following expenses:

• EYBA league & referee fees
• ABA fees / Insurance
• Coaching clinics
• Equipment (Jerseys, Score Clocks, Basketballs, Pylons, Etc)
• First aid supplies
• and LCBA administration & operating costs.

 

IS THERE FINANICIAL ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE FOR REGISTRATION FEES?

The LCBA does not provide a sponsorship program for players, however individual child grants for financially disadvantaged families may be available through Canadian Tire's Jumpstart Program.

INCOMPLETE ONLINE REGISTRATION or INCOMPLETE PAYMENT?

Registration is completed thru the online registration system on our website and is considered completed upon payment. Should the online registration not be started or completed, that player cannot be placed on a team/attend practices for liability reasons.  As well, there is a zero-tolerance policy for incomplete registrations and league game play.  If coaches have players with incomplete registrations, their player names will not show up on the Team - Players list on the website and the coach will know that he/she must bench that player until the parent completes it.  Declined Split Payments (2nd payment) will also disqualify players from practicing and playing games.

• The LCBA will not be following up directly with parents with incomplete registration
• The onus is on the parent to make sure their player registration is complete. 

In the event the full registration process has not been completed;

• That player will not be registered with EYBA, and subsequently, if that player plays in games, their team is declared ineligible by playing and that team will be forced to forfeit any past games in which that player has participated.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I AM ON THE WAITING LIST FOR REGISTRATIONS?

The LCBA estimates the numbers of teams and available player spots at the start of registration.  Players will be put onto a team WAITING LIST after the estimated team spots are filled.

• Waiting list players will only be placed on a team if:
  • There are a sufficient number of players to form an additional team.
  • There is a head coach available to run the additional team.
• Player parents on the waiting list will be contacted if there is available space on a team.
• All players must complete their registration/fees before they will be officially placed on a team.

 

WHAT HAPPENS IF I WITHDRAW/CANCEL AFTER I REGISTER?

In order to withdraw from registration, you need to email the LCBA Registrar with your player name and their registered division.

• A non-refundable registration fee of $25.00 will be deducted to your team fee refund.
• Team fee refunds may be pro-rated based on how far into the season at the time of request/withdrawal.
• Player Jersey Deposits will only be refunded if the Jersey is returned to the LCBA.
• ABA Player Insurance fees are not refunded by the LCBA.  Members will need to contact the ABA to request their membership refund.
