Spectator Mediator and Clean Up Monitor
Spectator Mediator
The abuse of game officials by coaches and spectators is the main reason why referees (especially those in their early teens) drop out of the development program. As a result, the league face severe shortages of game officials at all levels. Addressing this unacceptable behavior is a top priority for EYBA, particularly if youth basketball is to maintain an adequate supply of referees.
Both Home and Away teams, are required to provide a Spectator Mediator for every EYBA league game.
Failure to provide a Spectator Mediator will result in a default win for the opposing team.
- The Spectator Mediator can be any person over the age of 18, with the exception of the team’s registered coaching staff (includes team managers).
- The Spectator Mediator can be a different person each game.
- The Spectator Mediator must wear an identifying neck lanyard and sit in a visible area in the stands with the spectators.
It is the responsibility of the Spectator Mediators to introduce themselves (while wearing their lanyard) to the officials. This should be done at the score table 5
minutes prior to game start. - Duties:
- Wear the neck lanyard - this is to be provided by a team official.
- Be seated with your team’s spectators.
- Monitor the behavior of your teams’ spectators and coaching staff.
5b.4.4 Quickly diffuse potential issues before they escalate by either making your presence more visible, or calmly addressing the behavior with the person(s)
involved. - Address inappropriate comments, gestures, and/or any other unsporting behavior directed at the officials, players, coaching staff or any other individual
by your teams’ spectators. - Report any major incidents by submitting an email report to your zone director, outlining the following details:
- Date/Time/Location/Age Category and Division/Teams
- Briefly describe what transpired, including all pertinent information
- If able, please provide names, numbers and team affiliations
- Please exclude hearsay. EYBA has strong disciplinary policies regarding falsified and exaggerated reports.
- It is the responsibility of your zone director to forward this report on to the EYBA Executive Director.
Clean Up Monitor
EYBA needs to have someone from each team responsible for the cleanliness of the gyms the EYBA uses for games. Having one person responsible at each game will allow EYBA to “police” the
cleanliness of the gyms. This will also help us have a positive personal relation with the schools, custodians, and the school boards. Leaving a mess is major reason as to why EYBA is losing their gyms for games
and practices. Please ensure that the practice gyms are given the same respect as a game gym.
- Both Teams team will provide a “Clean-up” monitor.
- This person will sign the scoresheet confirming that they oversee keeping the facility clean.
- This person will have to come to the gym 15 minutes early to make sure that they are there before the other game finishes.
- Duties:
- Make sure that absolutely NO ONE is wearing their outdoor shoes in the gym.
- Make sure parents from their own team are not bringing in coffee, other beverages (except water), and/or snacks into the gymnasiums.
- Make sure any trash left behind (coffee cups, water bottles) are collected and put in the garbage cans.
- Make sure that the team benches are clear of water bottles, tape and any other items that are left behind.
- The clean-up monitor can be the same as the score keeper, timekeeper, team manager or one of the coaches but it must be an adult.
- Sanctions:
- If your team has been found in non-compliance of this, we will follow the normal discipline procedure.
- Sanctions will include a warning for the first offense and may lead to possible forfeit of a game as well as ineligible for the playoffs.
- Please understand that we will that we will be very strict with the cleanup official as leaving a dirty gym is one of the top reasons as to why we lose
gyms which is the reason why we play less games each year.
